Harthill Leisure Centre

Planning notices for this application are expected to go up next week.

The aim of the proposed changes is to help secure the long-term future of the building itself and the facilities it supports, including the bowling green and Workbench, by finding more sustainable and cost-effective ways to run it.

This has not been an easy decision, and a great deal of thought has gone into considering the best way forward for the site.

This includes making better use of currently underused space, such as repurposing the court area to improve parking. The intention is to create properly marked bays across the whole site, including the existing car park, with wider spaces and appropriate provision for accessible (disabled) parking. This will support users of the site and help ease pressure around the doctor’s surgery.

It would also allow public toilets to be available at peak times—something the Parish Council is frequently asked about, particularly from families needing baby changing facilities. It will also create two small, affordable units for local businesses to provide accessible services within the village as well as offering potential for a more flexible café and meeting space for community use.

When the application is live, anyone can submit comments in support or objection via the RMBC planning portal. We would encourage people to read the full planning statement, which sets out the rationale behind the proposal, before forming a view.
